Editor's Note

In 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit the seminal hard-rock band Deep Purple to form his own contribution to the annals of rock history, Rainbow. Fronted by mystically-minded lead singer Ronnie James Dio, Rainbow produced a string of classic albums that made them one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 1970s. But Blackmore's desire to craft a more commercial sound clashed with Dio's purist tendencies, resulting in the singer's departure in 1979. Though Blackmore continued the band with a rotating roster of musicians, Rainbow would never again reach the creative heights achieved by the Blackmore-Dio collaboration. This documentary offers a critical review of Rainbow's recorded output during these crucial years between Blackmore's formation and Dio's depature (1975-1979) through behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with critics and musicologists, and rare live performances of tracks such as "Man on the Silver Mountain," "Stargazer," "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll," and more.
