Notes & Personnel Info | | Pentangle: Jacqui McShee (vocals); Mike Piggott, Bert Jansch (acoustic guitar); Danny Thompson (double bass); Terry Cox (drums). | | When the beloved British folk outfit Pentangle reformed in 1982 (minus John Renbourne), they came together renewed and strengthened by their outside exploits. Their first studio album after their reunion, OPEN THE DOOR, reflects a new muscularity undergirding the old Elizabethan coloratura. Bert Jansch's dexterous guitar playing (his solo instrumental "The Dolphin" is a highpoint) provides the setting for Jaqui McShee's glittering, other-worldly vocals, and the rhythm section of Danny Thompson and Terry Cox is as subtle as ever. Although not widely praised in its day--critics seemed to resist the possibility that a reformed Pentangle could live up to its earlier incarnation--the album has aged well and sits respectably among the band's more acclaimed earlier work. |
