GOT NO STRINGS is a pretty unassuming, down-to-earth album for such a high-concept project. It features Shocked reinterpreting songs from classic Disney movies backed only by a small, jazzy acoustic combo. Shocked's obvious passion for the material goes a long way toward making the songs connect. There's not an ounce of jokiness or novelty in her approach; Shocked treats these tunes as if they were Gershwin or Berlin standards. The folk-tinged-but-jazzy accompaniment pushes that notion along as well, and listening to the guitar-and-vocal version of "When You Wish on a Star," for instance, gives one the feeling of hearing a late-night session with some jazz diva in a smokey, after-hours bar. The occasional country/bluegrass touches (progressive-bluegrass banjo man Tony Furtado is one of the musicians on hand) only serve further to make GOT NO STRINGS a unique experience. |
